Sticks and Stones Sermon Series for Youth (free)

Here is a free sermon series for youth group: Sticks and Stones.

I’ve heard it said, “Sticks and stones may break our bones, but words can never hurt me.” This cliche´ statement is catchy, but it isn’t true. Sticks and stones bring temporary pain, but words can hurt for a lifetime. Words can hurt us. They can haunt us. They can consume our minds. Sticks and stones can break bones, but words can break hearts. At the core of this message is one central truth — your words have power. This sermon series explores how the book of Proverbs addresses the power of our words.

This is how the sermon series for youth breaks down:

Week 1: Words can be Weapons

We must actively apply a filter to our words. Just like a water filter purifies our drinking water, we must filter the phrases we share. Your words can make a difference. Your words can make someone sink or soar — choose language that makes people soar.
Scripture: Proverbs 12:18

Week 2: Lies

Lying is a dangerous habit that can wreak havoc on your life. Lying can crush relationships, make your life difficult, and lead to an identity crisis. If you want to be a friend that people trust, a good role model to those who look up to you and a shining light for Jesus, you need to commit to a life of honesty.
Scripture: Proverbs 12:22-23, John 14:6

Week 3: Gossip

Gossip is toxic. It has the power to destroy friendships, families, and even churches. Gossip serves a quick fix for our desire to feel superior. We must drop this harmful habit. You will never raise yourself up by bringing someone else down. The opposite is also true. Giving up gossip reveals strength. Let’s explore why God detests gossip and how we can eliminate this harmful habit from our lives.
Scripture: Proverbs 18:8, Proverbs 10:18, Proverbs 6

Week 4: Anger

Anger is the driving force behind some of the most cutting words you’ve ever heard. Whether it’s politicians glowing red in the face during a debate or families spiraling into conflict during a game of Monopoly, anger is a powerful emotion that breaks hearts and unravels relationships. So how do we learn how to harness our natural anger to push us towards holiness over harm?
Scripture: Proverbs 14:29, Ephesians 4:26
