THIS IS HOW THE FREE SERMON SERIES ON PHILIPPIANS BREAKS DOWN:
PART 1: YOUR DEATHBED CONFESSION

Paul’s letter to the Philippians looks something very like a deathbed confession. Having been imprisoned, he speculates that his execution could be near. And so he confesses words of love, gratitude, and encouragement to people close to his heart. But he also confesses his love and close bond with Jesus, and how this heavenly intimacy has instilled in him a sense of joy, courage, and peace that can’t be found here on earth. If you knew your time was short, what would your confession be?
Scripture: Philippians 1:3-11

PART 2: YOUR GLASS MUST BE EMPTIED TO BE FILLED

This sermon focuses on Paul “counting all things as loss” in order to be found in Christ, and how this is based on Christ first emptying himself of his divinity so we could belong to him. As both Jesus and Paul demonstrate, things that truly fulfill us like joy, courage, and peace can only be found through heavenly intimacy—by emptying our glass so we can be filled up in him.
Scripture: Philippians 3:4b-12; 2:1-11

PART 3: THE REAL REASON TO PURSUE JOY AND PEACE

Paul encourages the Philippians to be people of joy. He calls them to seek God’s surpassing peace and dwell on whatever is true, honorable, pure, lovely, commendable, excellent, and worthy of praise. Most of us want these things, but find them beyond our grasp. The key is heavenly intimacy, where we bear the fruit of joy and peace through our dependence upon Christ. But as Jesus sought to live not for himself but for others, we see the real reason to pursue joy and peace—not just for ourselves, but so others can know God and find them too.
Scripture: Philippians 4:4-9

PART 4: HEARTS CONTENDED—EYES TOWARD HEAVEN

It really feels like Paul has one foot on earth and one in heaven. He both longs to be with the Philippians and to be with Christ. He emits a light of peace and strength that hovers above all human anxiety and fears for the future. Christ is his strength. His heavenly intimacy helps him to live above the highs and lows of daily living, from feeling plenty and hunger, abundance and need. While imprisoned and awaiting possible death, he knows his true citizenship is in heaven. He models a perspective and way of being that we can all follow no matter how many more years we’ve been given.
Scripture: Philippians 3:13-16; 4:11-13
